Along with Shintaro Sakamoto’s music playing, we entered Evon’s studio

A large, simple cypress cabinet and a tea-making bowl are nestled in the tatami mats like a sanctuary for tea.

There’s pottery placed stably in the room with ancient fortune telling engraved on it.

Interestingly, the small animal pottery attached to the disco ball on the table and the floor-to-ceiling bathtub with Jui Hung Ni's erotic tiles. With the bubbles of the sunset rising up, it seems like the alternation of day and night, intended to be lively

Q：Tell us about yourself

Hi I’m Evon, a maker. I am an Aquarius with a very earthy inner world, my will is my freedom, I stay home to make fine ceramics for tea, and sometimes I try something new like playing sculpture. Life can simply explain as: Day tea night booze.

Q：Can you tell us about your journey with ceramic and tea? For me, they're like soulmates, whether it is the presentation of the vessels or the display of the pottery, it is always inseparable from tea...

I love to drink tea since I was a kid, I started to learn about Urasenke's powder tea ceremony in Japan, I have also learned more about Taiwanese tea because of making teaware, from a functional level, teaware’s clay, glaze, and shape of the tea utensils affect the tea broth, but there is also a spiritual value. Making pottery and making tea are both practices for calmness and mindfulness.

Q："Tea Picking, Tea Compounding" especially you mentioned when you compound tea it needs to put your feelings, from tea making to tea tasting, can you share your experience?

Pottery is made by firing from clay, and tea is grown from the ground when I’m compounding tea, tea specialist Mr. Su share his wisdom, he said to grow good wild tea, the land is crucial, good soil is moisturizing and rich in minerals, the first few brews of a tea are the craftsmanship of the tea maker, but the aftertaste is about the soil and water, the clean taste. It also made me reflect on the nature of teaware and how to serve tea.

Q：As a ceramist, you must love collecting ceramics, can you share with us your collection, what are the details that you care about? Have there been any interesting things?

I always like to buy more utensils than clothes, ceramic, glass, metal, and other materials, my roommate said to me: “You can’t wear them out in public” but these objects have been there for years. I pay attention to weightiness when it comes to objects, I like the beauty of imperfect curves.

Q：I feel like you are the messenger of ceramic and tea, for you, it's not just about creating, it's about remembering your unique culture and emotions in your body. Are there any predecessors or artists you particularly appreciate or admire along the way?

I am very grateful to my teachers, Mr. Wu Wei Cheng and Mr. Masayuki Inoue, who have been my mentors on the path of learning pottery. I learned that there is a way to live by making pottery. When I first saw his work, I thought it was an unknown object that fell from outer space. No matter what generation, the soil is honest, all you have to do is to be your own unique self and seriously squeeze it into the soil.

Q：Can you see that you radiate a very unique vibe? For me, “You” is a combination of Yin and Yang, the strength of the force is elegant and relaxing, very much like the trajectory of calligraphy, very contemporary... For you, what would be the scene and how would a romantic date with ceramic and tea happen? If you could write a romantic love letter what would it be?

Doing ceramics is actually physical work, and I have done it until my body broke down, learning to adjust to a more suitable pace for my output. Compact and comfortable, with both chaos and elegance, the quality of the work will be good only after living a beautiful life. I love to make a mess at home after the kiln, and then frantically polish and clean the work after finishing the tea table, boiling water and making tea. Ceramic and tea dating should be a tea party, tea recipes are like love letters for the favorite tea, planning a trip for it, One Encounter, One Chance.
