Please Leave a Trace of Your Art on My Skin - Tattoo Artist Birdycody

Tattoo artist Birdycody (Cody) creates her art on a piece of skin. Disregarding special events and anniversaries that might’ve given meanings to us, Birdycody cares more about the art and details of her work which will be engraved on her bonded customers. Cody has created a luscious style that became the core value of her genius, expressing her art in a spontaneous and casual way. She transforms anything black and white into a mischievous design. Through Cody’s love for fashion, she perfectly interprets inooknit’s elegance and cuteness.

Q: What is the founding story of your tattoo journey and what inspired you to create in the first place?

I graduated with a fashion design degree and have always loved drawing since young. However, I never looked like the tattooist type, neither did I think I would ever become one. What drew me to this journey was simply my passion for drawing. Repositioning the art from a piece of paper to the skin, it gives me the freedom to unleash my creativity and elongates the reason for my practice.

Q: Do you remember your first tattoo design?

Of course I do. With traditional tattoo practice, we have to follow a teacher to learn and practice dedicatedly; however, I did not begin my implementation on fruit peels nor on artificial skin. I started practicing on my friend’s skin, almost every single one of my friends has my design tattooed, my mother wasn’t an exception, either.

Q: What is the biggest difference between making sketches on paper v.s. on skin?

In my perspective, tattooing feels more like giving presents. Drawing on paper is self-serving; drawing on another person’s body is a blessing.

Q: You are known for your unique designs, what inspires you to create?

Probably from eating food! (LOL) I think satiety and sleep are important, they give me fulfillments which lead to inspirations. For example, I’d draw something fluffy in winter time; tiger print fused with the designs during Chinese New Year. I carry a belief of “Live Happily Everyday”, with that in mind, inspiration comes to me naturally and merges with my original design. Needless to say, I love different types of pop culture including fashion brands or classic movies. I take great pleasure in fusing what I see with my creations.

Q: How do you define your style?

I have enjoyed the softness of the fabrics since I was young, I also have a desire for materials. While studying fashion design in the university, putting on different outfits and styles have always been fun for me. Now, I love being a woman and the quality and empowerment of being a lady. Even though we’re used to fast fashion, I still loved putting outfits together to make myself happy. I love anything that brings people joy, that’s my poise.

Q: Do you have a different frame of mind since you began your tattoo career?

I don’t usually ask my customers about their intentions of getting a tattoo. A tattoo doesn’t have to be a tribute or a memorial, in turn, I believe a new tattoo represents a new beginning: the ones who get tattooed by me were happy and the love for my aesthetic will be another beginning of happiness. I have gotten used to creating spontaneously and tattooing on my customers on the same day. It’s not that I don’t take it seriously, it’s just that I am fond of the aha-moment.

Q: Do you have other creative outlets other than tattoos?

More and more people are getting tattoos, hence, more and more people are getting their tattoos removed. So maybe I should consider opening a laser tattoo removal shop. (laughter) I never considered myself as a tattooist, whether it was acting, theater or applying skills on fashion design. These are all of the challenges and milestones for my creativity, I made things from scratch including the doll in my hand. Ever since I started making art, more people started to take notice of my creations, hoping that one day I am not just a tattooist. Nevertheless, things happen naturally, every creation is inspired by something, it doesn’t have to be planned or scheduled.

Q: With such an unrestrained soul, how did you feel unboxing inooknit and putting them on?

The knitted materials swaddled my feet so comfortably, they felt amazing. I love the ballet strap design that gives a little bit of mysteriousness and fun, the contrasting echoes my vibe because I love both the classy lady style as well as the sharp contrasts.

Q: Any new challenges for the future?

There will definitely be new designs and styles. To me, new things happen organically; it is not a challenge, everything is planned.
