Rationalism:Deby x inooknit

Of all the spaces we’ve been to, which is the most memorable?

All the encounters, opportunities, and blessings we’ve had…

“I hope to see it again.”- the pandemic forced Deby apart from the museum she has a deep connection with. When asked about her romantic relationship, a rationalist like Deby, mentioned this alternative love with the art museum.

Q:Tell us about yourself.

My name is Deby, both sun and Rising at Scorpio (moon at Aries). My blood type is A, I have the INTJ personality type which indicates that I’m an “architect.”

Q:You have an elegant aesthetic, do you have a daily ritual?

Surprisingly, I’m an architect/rationalist! (INTJ Personality type.) I am result-oriented. Every day, I’d have a glass of water after I woke, then a cup of coffee during the day, a cup of protein at night, and then I’d massage myself with essential oil and stretch my body. That’s my daily ritual.

Q:You are considered a “slashie”, can you tell us about your role at by deco and Nylon Japan?

I got my master’s degree in Japan and was also a hair model there. I appeared the most in NYLON JAPAN Magazine and thought that it was meant to be.

Upon graduation, I wanted to do something related to what I did in Japan. Fortunately, NYLON JAPAN had an open position and I got hired, I was very lucky. Aside from writing cosmetic blogs, I also introduced a lot about Taiwan’s brands, music, and movies. Moreover, my works had the opportunity to be shown on other websites and magazines.

While studying at the Institute of Fine Arts University in Japan, I practiced in the exhibition studio. The most common task was to use artificial flowers to make photography scenes. After that, I began to wonder if I could use flowers as a medium to do more creations, so I started to take some lessons.

I took some time off after my last job and started to help around at my friend's flower studio. Last year, I officially branded my works and established by deco Space Decoration Studio. I hope it isn’t limited to floral art; space display and visual design can be part of the service at my studio, as well.

I majored in architecture in Taiwan and my first job in Taiwan was as a visual merchandiser for luxurious brands. Integrating the creative experience from the past can definitely help develop more interesting works.

Q:You have experienced 18 art galleries and 30 exhibition spaces in the introduction of "Tokyo Art Travel." How long did it take you to complete this journey? Are there any adventures in the museum?

In addition to the pre-work (including negotiating with the museum and scheduling the shooting time) and follow-up (reviewing the manuscript for the museum and confirming the information), it should be about half a year, but the official interview and shooting time should be completed in about a week. I adore Tokyo a lot and have lived there for three years and made many friends. So in fact, I didn't feel too much pressure at first, but it was very challenging, especially with my new book coming out.

I once met architect Tadao Ando himself at 21_21 DESIGN SIGHT, he’s also the one who designed this space. At that time, a group of us silently looked at him with reverence. He probably noticed that he was recognized by us, so he gave us a slight nod before leaving.

Among the art museums in Tokyo, my favorite is the Hara Museum, which is now closed. Because of the inconvenience of transportation, tourists rarely visit. The predecessor of the art museum was a private residence, and it is also one of the few architectural works of Japanese modernist architecture that is still completely preserved. When the art museum opened in 1979 focusing on modern art, it was unique and rare.

The most prominent feature of the Hara Museum is that there were many works created in response to the space in the museum, including storage rooms and toilets, which have also become exhibition spaces. But it's a pity that the museum was closed last year because the building was deteriorating. It's really sad that I can't see it for the last time during the epidemic…

The staff at Hara Museum were extremely kind and they really made a positive impression.

The first exhibition that comes to mind is the exhibition at Maison Hermès Le Forum, the space of the Hermès flagship store in Ginza. Fujiko Nakaya is known for her fog sculpture art. The visitors can feel the moisture on their skin when walking in the museum, it was very impressive.

Q:Are there any unforgettable places in Taiwan?

I would say it’s the beaches. When I was a student, I went to the beach every summer. It is also a place with profound temperature, smell, and humidity. Taiwan is an oceanic country, so any beach I visit I would connect it with Taiwan.

Q:Back when you were helping around at the floral shop, you’d observe and understand the flowers; made connections with them like you were writing a love letter to yourself. What message would you convey through this beautiful experience?

Since the early days, I was fond of various delicate flowers, and now I prefer flowers with their own opinions: loud shapes and strong personalities. I would like to use three or four types of flowers without using leaves as buffers, and simply stacking the volume with shapes. The implication may be that all shapes have their own beauty. So is simple the best or basic is the most important?

Q:inooknit’s Mary Jane flats accompanied you all afternoon today. Do they echo some of your traits?

I am amazed by how soft they are, and the coverage of the shoes is perfect. I wouldn’t say that my personality is as good as this pair of shoes.
